How to Maintain Your Swimming Pool | India

Good swimming pool maintenance begins with understanding your swimming pool and its systems.

Before anyone can properly maintain the swimming pool, one should gain knowledge about its filters, pumps, plumbing and valve systems.  By understanding the basic components of your swimming pool, and their purposes, aids you keep everything running smoothly and also makes it easier to determine and solve the problems when they occur.

But irrespective of whether you have a basic rectangular pool or a massive oval-shaped pool, L- shaped pool, every pool has five basic elements that need regular care to keep it running smoothly.

What are the Basic Parts of a Swimming Pool?

These basic parts include:

  • The pool water - Chemistry of water

  • The pool’s interior surface or liner

  • The pumps, filters, valves skimmers & returns - Circulation system

  • The type of pool’s system whether it is an overflow or a skimmers pool

  • Control Panel and Lighting systems

The Pool Water Chemistry

Being one of the most important components the water in your pool is the key to everlasting happiness. Keeping it clean, clear, and stable shields you and your family from contaminants and pollutants. It also helps you in avoiding expensive hardware replacements due to corrosion or sediment build-up and will give you sparkling pool water.

What is does Swimming Pool Water Chemistry mean?

Swimming pool water chemistry may seem complicated, you don’t have to worry. As a crucial part of effective pool maintenance and water care, the basic pool water chemistry is very simple. The most important is to check for the water pH and chlorine levels using appropriate test kits before you reach for the chemicals. Understanding your pool water is the first step to balancing it.

The three most important elements of water chemistry are:

  • pH levels: Is also commonly known as the Power of Hydrogen test / Acidity of Water, pH of 7 is neutral, anything below is acidic and anything above the pH value 7 and up to 14 is Alkaline. The ideal range for your pool is 7.4 to 7.6.

  • Alkalinity: It serves as a pH buffer and helps in controlling sudden spikes in ph levels. The ideal range is between 100 to 150 parts per million (ppm).

  • Sanitizer levels: The amount of chlorine, cyanuric acid, bromine, etc. in your pool water. Levels may differ with the type of sanitizer used in the swimming pool.

Once the data regarding the pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels are at hand, we can think about the chemicals to correct the water parameters.

Swimming Pool Tiles & Liners (Interior)

The surfaces of your swimming pool tiles or liner are in constant contact with pool water. Retaining these surfaces clear of algae and debris will assist in keeping you swimming pool clean and safe.

This is pretty easy and can be achieved by practising regular brushing of pool tiles or by using an appropriate automatic robotic pool cleaner. At least weekly thoroughly brush and vacuum your swimming pool.

Pool Filter System

If pumps are the heart of your pool its liver is the filters. Your pool pump draws water from the swimming pool and keeps it moving like your heart. And Your pool filter clears dirt and other contaminants from the swimming pool water just like your liver filters your blood.

Depending upon the application there are three types of filters which are commonly used for swimming pools namely sand, cartridge, and diatomaceous earth (DE). And according to the above types of filters, the maintenance method differs. A well maintained and functioning pool filter system ensures clean and hygienic water to enjoy swimming.

The Pumps, Valves, Skimmers & Returns - Circulation system

During the routine maintenance one should check the performance of the swimming pool main filter pump, and also should check for any obstructions or debris which is accumulated in the prefilter chamber of the pump.

All valves shall be checked for its smooth operation and any signs of wear and leaks. The main drain and skimmers shall be inspected for debris and foreign objects.  The return inlets in the pool should be correctly adjusted for the right flow direction.

The most important objective is that proper circulation of swimming pool water is achieved with no or minimal dead zones. Proper pool circulation is key to healthy and safe swimming.

Like other major home enhancements, your pool may have fancy accessories like inverter pool heat pumps and LED lighting, high-tech pool covers, and even underwater pool speakers. These additional items will have there own scheduled maintain procedures which you have to follow.

Always Keep it Simple

It is advised to print and paste a copy of swimming pool maintenance procedures and schedule on to a wall of the pump room. An keep it simple so that others can understand and do the tasks without much trouble.

A swimming pool is one of the most pleasing ways of entertainment. And it needs regular care when you know how your pool works, it is very simple and easy to maintain it.
