Types of fishes used in Aquaculture and Aquaponics

Aquaculture and Aquaponics are one of the two methods which are widely used adapted all over the world to cultivate fish through sustainable farming. 

Aquaculture is a method that we grow fish in a natural habitat like natural ponds, paddy field, etc. And Aquaponics is a method by which we grow fish in an artificial man-made Ponds like the concrete pond, fibre tank, IBC tank, liner ponds etc.

There are two types of cultivated fishes (1) Air-breathing fish and (2) water-breathing fish - fish which breath dissolved oxygen in the water.

1)    Air-breathing fishes

  1. Anabas

  2. Pangasius

  3. Gourami

2)   Water breathing fishes

  1. Tilapia

  2. Red-bellied Natter

  3. Rohu

  4. Mrigal

  5. Catla

1) Air Breathing Fishes

A) Anabas:

Aquaculture | Aquaponics

This Anabas fish is also known by the Climbing Perch, they are carnivorous and It will grow up to the size of 15 to 30 CM length in wild. The duration of cultivating is 6 months to 1 year.

It has the ability to survive without water for a period of 6 to 8 hrs. They can be found in both brackish and fresh water and can be found in abundance around South and East Asia.

B) Pangasius:

Pangasius is also called as Shark catfish, It will grow up to the size of (20 to 30 CM and above) length in fresh water. The duration of cultivating is around 6 months to 1 year. Pangasius is mostly found in South and Southeast Asia.

C) Gourami:

This fish is also called as Climbing Gouramies, they are soft and friendly. It will grow up to the size of (20 to 30 CM and above) length in fresh water. It can be harvested in 1 to 2 years period, they are mostly found in India, Pakistan and mostly northeasterly towards Korea.

2) Water Breathing Fishes

A) Tilapia:

This fish is also called Cichlid fish, mostly 4 species of tilapia are found in Aquaculture. They are Nile tilapia, Red tilapia, Gift tilapia and Mono sex tilapia. Gift tilapia is one of the high yield species (Gift: Genetically Improved Farmed Tilapia).

It will easily grow up to the size of (15 to 30 CM) length in fresh water and also less commonly found living in the brackish water of India. The duration of cultivating is (6 months to 1 year). They are mostly found in the north-east to the south-west corner of Asia.

B) Redbelly Natter:

This fish is also referred to as Red-bellied Piranha. they are carnivorous and will grow to the size of (15 to 30 CM) length in fresh water. The normal duration of cultivating is 6 to 1 year and are usually found in South America.

C) Rohu:

This fish is commonly called as Rui, It is from carp family. Mostly found in South Asia, it will grow up to the size of (15 to 70 CM and above) length in fresh water in wild. But the duration of cultivating is ( 1 to 2 years) They are mostly found in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar etc.

D) Mrigal:

This fish is also known as white carp, it will grow up to the size of (20 to 90 CM and above) length in fresh water in wild. But the duration of cultivating is 1 to 2 years or more.  Mrigal fishes are found and cultivated in India.

E) Catla:

This fish is also called as Major carp, it will grow up to the size of (100 to 180 CM and above) length in fresh water in wild. But the duration of cultivating is (1 to 2 years or more). They are can be widely found in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar etc.

Farmers usually prefer to cultivate all the 3 species in one pond to avoid the wastage of food. These fishes will help the farmers to utilize the food ideally, Rohu takes food from the surface, Catla takes it from the centre and Mrigal from the bottom layers of the water.

This method of aquaculture and Aquaponics will help the farmers to sell their products to the Customers as chemical free or Safe to eat products.
