Types of fishes used in Aquaculture and Aquaponics

Aquaculture and Aquaponics are one of the two methods which are widely used adapted all over the world to cultivate fish through sustainable farming.

Aquaculture is a method that we grow fish in a natural habitat like natural ponds, paddy field, etc. And Aquaponics is a method by which we grow fish in an artificial man-made Ponds like the concrete pond, fibre tank, IBC tank, liner ponds etc.

There are two types of cultivated fishes (1) Air-breathing fish and (2) water-breathing fish - fish which breath dissolved oxygen in the water.

1)    Air-breathing fishes

  1. Anabas

  2. Pangasius

  1. Tilapia

  2. Red-bellied Natter

  3. Rohu

  4. Mrigal

  5. Catla
