Checks Before Building a Staircase
The first and foremost thing is to decide the type of stair design depending on the available space and other factors.
Following are the type of commonly used staircase designs.
L shaped Staircases.
U shaped Staircases.
Then when styling your handrails consider the length, shape, type and fixtures of the handrails. We can help you choose the handrails profiles which best suits your home style.
In southern India, most staircases are cast out of concrete which only needs handrails work.
Cable railing has been recognized and adopted significantly for residential applications over the years, despite the fact that it has been used commercially for quite some time due to its strength and longevity.
Metal, stone, glass, and wood are wonderful substitutes for increasing aesthetic appeal. When dealing with spirals and other geometric shapes, this is useful. The perfect staircase must be in harmony with the ease of ascending and the available area.
The ideal slope for conventional stairways is roughly 30-50 degrees, with 37 degrees being the best. According to the stairway's inclination, they are classified into three types, namely ramps, staircases, and ladders.
Thread Size ( Steps)
The minimum tread width should be at least 25cms for easy ascending and descending. The number of steps will never equal the number of risers.
If the riser height is more than 18 cms it will be a challenging affair for the elderly to use the stairs. Normally is kept at no more than 15 cms.
Make sure you don't mix up riser heights with headroom heights or the total stair height. The distance between any step and the ceiling is known as headroom (or fixtures).
Ensure always that there is enough headroom for people to move around. And also for the transfer or shifting of household furniture if in case.
Total Nos Of Steps
To find the number of steps, first fix the height of a riser. Using the below formula calculate the no of steps required to go up and down the stairs with ease.
The total number of steps = Floor to floor height / Height of a riser.
A variety of material choices is available when it comes to stair handrails and balusters. It shall be strong enough to support the weight of individuals who would use them. The height of Stair handrails is kept between 85cm to 100 cm for safety reasons.
It is installed in a way that protects little children from falling through the stairs. The space between the balusters and the vertical posts are not more than 8 to 10 cms.
Chose the right Newel Post:
A newel post is a vertical element that joins the ends of the strings and the handrail at the ends of the flight. which are normally made from cast iron, Steel rods, wood acrylic etc.
In short, according to the available space and purpose of the stair, there are three main components to design when building a staircase – the treads, risers, and stringers.
