Koi Pond Construction Cost
The cost of constructing a koi fish pond will depend on many factors. Location, size, finish, filters are some factors / important elements of pond construction which sum up to the total cost.
A koi pond is a great place to enjoy nature and spend time admiring your favourite fishes. Building a successful, healthy pond will be much easier with some good Designing, planning and forethought.
Koi Pond Location
Choosing a good location for your pond plays a very important role in its cost factor.
-
Shade: Koi fish ponds typically need some shade, temperatures in your area ultimately determine how much. If you can’t provide enough shade for the pond then floating plants are a good option, they also help koi hide from predators. shelters of a mesh can also be used to provide shade, they also prevent debris from entering the water. Less debris less load on filters.
-
Trees: Trees close to the pond can cause leaves, branches, or other debris to fall into the pond which deteriorates the water quality rapidly. Some leaves can cause severe discolouration of water. If trees are used to provide shade they would ideally be at a safe distance to keep debris or roots from entering the pond which can compromise the integrity of the walls and yet provide ample morning and afternoon shade.
-
Visibility: Ideally your pond should be visible from inside the home as well as from the garden or outdoor entertaining areas. Providing seatings close to the pond will enhance your enjoyment of the area a great deal.
Koi Pond Size
The client has the final say on the size he chooses to build. This is mostly dependent on the size and budget. As the size of your pond increases your filter and other equipment will need to be sized accordingly. A standard koi pond should generally be 2.5 meters in Length x 1-meter width x 1.5 Mtrs in Depth. Which will have a water capacity of about 3750 Liters.
Quality, Make and Finish
Different types of projects have different levels of complexity and detail, as the detailing of the pond increases the cost goes up.
The cost will vary upon the different materials chosen for making the pond. i.e, the cost of finishing the pond with a cement grout finish will be much cheaper than laying tiles inside the Pond which increases the aesthetics. You can also make fish ponds with EPDM liners. which are thick flexible plastic sheets.
Filter System
Pond filtration requires three main components namely mechanical filtration, biological filtration and a UV water clarifier.
-
First: The mechanical filtration needs to remove both the suspended particles and the debris that has settled to the bottom so the water is clear, and we can see our fish and plants. If not removed, this organic mulm can harbour dangerous organisms and chemicals that threaten the health of your fish pond.
-
Second: The biofiltration needs to change the toxic chemicals like ammonia and nitrites, to harmless or helpful chemicals like nitrates, oxygen, and nitrogen. This is done with biologically active bacteria species through the Nitrification process.
-
Third: Uv water clarifier does play an important part in pond filtration by controlling the growth of alga. The correct wattage of Ultra Violet lamps will make a lot of difference in terms of water clarity.
Although many types of filters are available in the market a bio-mechanical filter system with a UV Water clarifier will be the best choice, in the long run, it will give you better performance and value for money.
