What is a Water Hammer Arrestor?

Is a safety device which is installed in the buildings water supply system to protect from hydraulic shock.

In normal cases, it is installed right next to the fixtures producing the water hammer, for example, solenoid valves, dishwashers and washing machines etc.

Some of the other causes are listed below.

• Plumbing design faults
• Airlocks in pipes
• Incorrect models of taps used for particular fittings
• Restrictions inflow caused by kinks, debris or corrosion in pipes
• Automatic valves on sprinkler systems
• Starting and stopping of pumps

Three types of water hammer arrestors are available in the market.

1, Spring Loaded
2, Piston Type
3, Diaphram Type

The size of the water hammer arrestor is relative to the diameter of the plumbing system, pipe length, velocity of water, pressure in the plumbing system etc. In the large system, it is ideal to do a surge analysis to confirm the location of the hammer arrestors installation.
