A bare bottom pond is fine, and easy to clean. Just make sure you have sufficient biological media in your filter.

If you want a substrate, your best bet is to use larger river stones or gravel.

Sand can get compacted and lead to pockets of anaerobic growth if you don't clean it often enough.
